Band Of Horses were surprisingly the loudest band I've ever seen. Wouldn't think it, but they were. Not heaviest, but loudest. The main dude is Ben Bridwell who was in Carissa's Wierd along with Mat Brooke was in BOH for a bit, but he's now in Grand Archives (who are also on Sub Pop).
As for what they sound like they get compared to My Morning Jacket a lot, only I like them more because they seem a little tighter and rockier. His vocals get compared to Jim James/early Neil Young or Wayne Coyne, but I don't really think it's derivative or anything. It is the perfect music to go for a nice drive while high when it just starts to get warm out.
Carissa's Wierd is Ben Bridwell and Mat Brooke's (ex Band Of Horses and now Grand Archives) old band. It has female vocals as well, by two ladies who are currently doing solo stuff. One is Jen Ghetto who is going by "S" now (understandably) and the other is Sera Cahoone who is currently on Sub Pop along with BOH/GA.
Iron & Wine has a song titled Carissa's Wierd on a bootleg I have called Home Recordings (10/01/01). Here, is a link.
Anyway, it's dreamy sadcore indie rock type shit. Here's an album for your listening pleasure.
Mat Brooke's new band is called Grand Archives. They are on Sub Pop along with a ton of other good acts. It's a lot more dreamy, poppy and happy than BOH/CW. I dig it.
This is the first of what is probably many six degrees type posts, it's how I work, so deal with it.
Here's their self-titled debut for yo ears.
